Performance Amnesia
Hey friend
Welcome to 200 Word Tuesdays. Where we give you short, actionable ideas to implement in your project management. We promise that you haven’t heard these powerful ideas anywhere else. Let’s get started.
Have you heard about Performance Amnesia?
As the name suggests, it’s about forgetting about your performance, good or bad.
It's all about not getting stuck in the past. Whether your last task was a big win or a total flop, this trick helps you move forward with a clear head.
Think about it like this: You just finished a project. If it went great, awesome! Pat yourself and your team on the back, have a little celebration, and then... let it go. Don't spend too much time basking in that glory, because there's always another challenge around the corner.
Now, what if things didn't go so well? First off, don't beat yourself up. Take a good look at what went wrong, learn from it, and then... you guessed it, let it go.
Holding onto mistakes can really mess with your confidence and slow you down.
The whole point of performance amnesia is to keep you focused on what's coming up, not what's behind you.
It's like driving a car - you need to look ahead to see where you're going, not stare in the rearview mirror.
This doesn't mean you should forget everything you've learned.
The key is to take the lessons with you but leave the emotional baggage behind. That way, you can tackle each new project with fresh energy and a clear mind.
So next time you wrap up a project or big task, good or bad, remember to use a little performance amnesia.
It might just be the trick you need to keep growing and improving as a project manager.
See you next week,
Jonathan (The Effective Project Manager)
