Hey friend
Welcome to 200 Word Tuesdays. Where we give you short, actionable ideas to implement in your project management. We promise that you haven’t heard these powerful ideas anywhere else. Let’s get started.
LMNT CEO James Murphy has a unique way of working. Which we hope will become more popular.
If you aren’t aware, LMNT is a sports drink company which focuses on electrolytes for athletes. They are a large multinational with annual revenues in excess of $30 million.
CEO James Murphy has gained some fame for working for 3 weeks and then taking a full 1 week break.
He believes that modern knowledge work should not follow the same schedule that we have created for industrial age labour. That the old way of working strips you of your creativity and leads to burnout.
So he works in sprints. The same method made popular by Naval Ravikant.
“As humans performing knowledge-based tasks, we seem designed for pulsing “sprint focused” work. Working well in creative and knowledge-based tasks is more like hunting like a lion than grazing like a cow – we are more carnivore than herbivore.” ~ James Murphy
So how exactly can we do this as project managers? Well we surely cannot disappear for a week. But we can do a few things:
Use the 80:20 principal to work on the correct tasks - read more here
Work at hours which suit our strengths and lifestyles - read more here
Go remote or hybrid - read more here
Use Artificial Intelligence - read more here
Use Design Sprints - read more here
Try your own version of a mini-sprint.
Let me know how it works for you.
See you next week,
Jonathan (The Effective Project Manager)
